Stop the Endangered Species Act rollback

The Bush administration is rolling out its 11th hour plans to unravel protections for Colorado’s environment. First up is protection for more than 30 threatened and endangered species in Colorado such as the lynx, the gray wolf, and the greenback cutthroat trout.

Despite its 30 years of success, the Bush administration wants to limit public involvement and remove the input of wildlife experts when making decisions about how to protect wildlife on Colorado’s unspoiled mountain landscapes and open spaces.

We can’t make sound judgments about new developments without the science-based input from wildlife experts. And with the new threat of global warming to wildlife, science-based experts are needed more than ever.

We only have until Monday, September 15th to call out the Bush administration for their nonsense. Letter	Dear Sec. Kempthorne: CC: Colorado Congressional Delegation I am writing to voice my opposition to proposed regulations that would significantly weaken the Endangered Species Act. These proposed changes would drastically limit our nation's ability to protect our most threatened and endangered wildlife—from lynx to greenback cutthroat trout in Colorado the polar bears and wolves to whooping cranes and whales across the U.S. and along our coasts. Under current law, before moving forward with projects like a dam or a mine, Fish and Wildlife Service and National Marine Fisheries Service biologists give input and advice about impacts on endangered species. This new proposal would instead allow agencies to decide a project's level of harm themselves, removing the step where expert advice is offered. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has been instrumental in reducing the impacts of commercial logging and development projects on Colorado’s threatened and endangered wildlife. To remove the voice of science is nothing short of complete nonsense and disrespectful to Colorado’s wildlife and people. The proposed regulation is also intended to stop consideration of global warming impacts on species that are imperiled by climate change. Species like polar bears, salmon, and many others are harmed through the numerous actions that incrementally are driving climate change. Turning a blind eye to this kind of analysis has no basis in the law and makes no sense as a matter of policy. Also troubling, the administration seems to be working to keep the public out of the decision-making process by limiting the comment period to just 30 days. At a minimum, the public comment period should be extended to 120 days. Animals on the brink of extinction need consideration and protection. To ensure the future of our most vulnerable species, we should continue the requirement for independent scientific review and abandon these proposed changes.
